Genius Teacher, the Edtech startup launched by Housing.com founder Advitiya Sharma in India, has bagged an angel funding round worth US$ 2 million.
About 50 early-stage investors have invested in Genius Teacher, which includes Abhijit Bose – CEO at WhatsApp India, Kunal Shah – CEO at Cred, Sandeep Tandon – Co-founder at Freecharge, Dhruv Agarwal – CEO at PropTiger, Justin Sway – CEO at MMone Online, Dan Lapus – Cofounder at Cvent, Nimish Kampani – President at Let’s Venture, Gaurav Gupta – ex-VP at Snapdeal, Bikram Bedi – ex-MD at AWS India and Farooq Adam – Co-founder at Fynd.
Investors Whiteboard Capital and VKG Ventures LLP, have also invested in Genius Teacher.
Sharma, who resigned from Housing.com in March 2016, had set up the quiz-based e-learning arena focusing on the K-12 category. It has already provided services to almost 70,000 students as a B2B platform. Using its new B2C platform, Sharma plans to expand the service to about 500,000 paid subscriptions in the next 9-12 months.
“India’s K-12 category is a $25 billion market with Rs 15,000-20,000 average household spend,” Sharma, CEO Genius Teacher added. Online training platforms in the K-12 category are predicted to extend 6.3 instances by 2022, to build a $1.7 billion market.
“Learning content has failed to spark children’s curiosity, the average time spent on even the most popular educational app in India today is only 71 minutes; on the contrary, Genius Teacher clocks an average of 180 minutes,” Bose, WhatsApp’s CEO added.
K-12 and post K-12 segment Ed-tech users in both paid and free user categories have increased, with the user base doubling to 90 million, according to a report by RedSeer and Omidyar Network. Ed-tech has highly benefited from the Covid-19 pandemic, with millions of parents and students turning to online courses as education institutions pan India remain closed.
