Virtual high school Sora bags US$ 2.7m funding

The virtual and live high school Sora that engages students with a dynamic and personalized platform announced the closing of US$2.7 million round for seed funding on 1st October 2020. The round was led by the enterprise Union Square Ventures

How is Sora going to utilize the investment?

Sora has planned to utilize this funding for hiring marketing and business development staff. They will add software engineers for their management system development, asynchronous course designer, and directors for their work-study program and growth marketing to their workforce. They will also use the investment in developing their Work and Study educational program. The program will introduce work and internship opportunities in Sora’s curriculum. It is further aimed to make attending Sora high school free of cost.

The funding round

Square Ventures led this funding round along with Village Global, Contrary Capital, Firebolt Ventures, ReThink Education, and Taylor Greene (angel investor). At the core, Sora is a replacement for private schools that incorporates project-based courses. The students are given learning expeditions for the first two weeks, after enrollment. And with time, students are supposed to develop projects. Other than this self-directed study program, it also offers several Socratic workshops and seminars. The students study all the subjects and standards required for graduation and high school. The students also have to take the SAT/ACT exam; they can practice for the same with the tools provided by Sora.

Sora is not merely limited to e-school experience. It also avails an optional in-person element where students are motivated to meet each other to attend a meet sponsored by Sora. It has created a team of 50 plus career mentors and provides educational services like SAT preparation and counseling sessions for the admission process.
