Japanese barbecue sauce company Bachan’s has announced a USD 13 million Series A funding round led by the private equity firm Sonoma Brands Capital. Along with notable Asian Americans, including Pat Tenore, the founder and president of RVCA, and American director Destin Daniel Cretton, existing investors Prelude Growth Partners and New Fare Partners also participated in the round.

The deal demonstrates the high level of investor trust in Bachan’s future success and growth trajectory, and the investment will hasten the company’s current rate of retail expansion as well as its staff and product innovation.

Bachan’s opened its doors in Sebastopol, California in 2019 and was founded by Justin Gill, inspired by a multi-generational family recipe. Sprouts Farmers Market, Fresh Thyme, Target, Kroger, H.E.B., Bristol Farms, Gelson’s Market, The Fresh Market,  and more are just a few of the more than 11,000 retail doors that sell the brand’s four primary Japanese barbecue sauce flavors, which include the Original, Hot and Spicy, Yuzu, and Gluten-Free. With the nationwide rollout of Publix and Albertsons in the fourth quarter of this year, Bachan’s is expanding its distribution.

Named after Justin’s grandmother, who is referred to as Bachan by the family, the company has developed a cult-like following of customers who use the products in various ways, such as marinades, finishing sauces, dipping sauces, stir-fry sauces, and even salad dressings. With the help of this round of finance, Bachan’s will keep growing its distribution network and concentrating on product innovation.

According to founder Justin Gill:

“When I decided it was time to bring on an investor who could help the brand grow alongside our current investment partners and best set up Bachan’s to meet its full potential, I purposefully selected Sonoma based on our shared values, and this partnership, along with Sonoma’s retail and digital expertise, will be crucial in establishing Bachan’s into the industry.”

Sonoma Brands Capital, Prelude Growth Partners, New Fare Partners, and the other individual investors look forward to supporting the business as it takes advantage of the expanding sauces and condiments category, penetrates additional vital retailers, and establishes itself as the first and only Japanese barbecue sauce brand in the nation. Since its launch, Bachan’s has shown an impressive growth trajectory.
