On July 4, 2022, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled four new initiatives to boost startups at Digital India Week 2022. The prime minister, Railway, IT and communications minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for IT, Rajeev Chandrashekhar, attended the event. The four new initiatives launched were Digital India Bhashini, Digital India GENESIS, Indiastack.global, and MyScheme.

Digital India Week 2022 boasted the theme of ‘Catalyzing New India’s Techade.’ The theme implies transforming India into a digitally empowered society and knowledge-driven economy. Further, the event witnessed the announcement of the first cohort of 30 institutions to be supported under the chips to startup (C2S) programme.

Purpose of the New Initiatives

The schemes introduced to boost the startups aim at enhancing technological accessibility and streamlining service delivery experiences.

The Digital India Bhashini scheme provides easy access to the internet and digital services in Indian languages. It involves including voice-based access and help in creating content in respective languages. In addition, the initiative focuses on building AI-based language technology solutions that require the creation of multilingual datasets.

Digital India GENESIS is the abbreviation for Gen-next Support for Innovative Startups. The scheme focuses on boosting startups across small towns of the nation. The initiative involves the creation of a National Deep-tech Startup Platform to discover, support, grow and make successful startups in tier-II and tier-III cities of India. The Government of India will deploy USD 94 million, i.e.INR 750 crore, to the scheme.

The third scheme launched is Indiastack.global. The initiative is a global repository of key projects implemented under India Stack like Aadhaar, UPI, Digilocker, Cowin Vaccination Platform, Government e-Marketplace (GeM), DIKSHA Platform and Ayushman Bharat Digital Health Mission. It will help other countries to implement similar projects on a population scale. The scheme further enhance India as the leader in building Digital Transformation projects. 

MyScheme, the fourth initiative launched, will cater as a service discovery platform for Government Schemes. The initiative is a one-stop search and discovery portal where users can find schemes that they are eligible for. Besides, the Prime Minister introduced her Meri Pehchaan scheme. It provides an authentication service requiring a single set of credentials for multiple online applications or services.

Moreover, under the India Semiconductor Mission, PM Modi announced the Chip to Startup (C2S) programme. The scheme focuses on workforce training in the design of semiconductor chips at bachelor’s, masters and research levels. Meanwhile, it will boost the startups working in this segment. The vision is to empower 85,000 specialized manpower, 175 unique semiconductor designs, 30 IP cores, 20 systems as well as 25 startups. NIT Manipur, India Institute of Technology Design and Manufacturing, Andhra Pradesh, Kurukshetra University, Haryana, and Indian Institute of Information Technology, among others, are the institutions selected for the cohorts.

What the PM said at Digital India Week 2022

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, said, “Today’s program gives a glimpse of continuously modernizing India in the 21st century. Through Digital India, the country has exemplified how revolutionary the correct use of technology is for the growth of humanity. I am glad that this campaign, which started eight years ago, has been expanding itself with the changing time. With the passage of time, the country which does not adopt modern technology, time moves ahead, leaving it behind. India was a victim of this during the third industrial revolution. But Today, we can proudly say that India is guiding the world in the fourth industrial revolution, Industry 4.0.”

He further said, “The power of digital India has created in the country in the last eight years has helped India a lot in combating the global pandemic. India is now working on the target of taking electronics manufacturing to more than $300 billion in the next three to four years. India also wants to become a chip maker from a chip taker. Moreover, investment is rapidly increasing in India to increase production of semiconductors.”
