On April 8, 2022, Airbyte, a well-funded open source data integration platform, announced the acquisition of Grouparoo, an open-source firm that helps businesses sync data between data warehouses and cloud-based applications. This compliments Airbyte’s product in many respects, as Airbyte concentrates on loading data into data warehouses, whereas Grouparoo focuses on operationalizing that data.

Airbyte co-founder and CEO Michel Tricot said:

“It’s a reverse ETL [extract, convert, load] company that uses open-source software.” They are entirely focused in the opposite direction [from Airbyte]. They have a very strong technical team, and they’ve already created a part of the product, so it’ll be about leveraging everything they’ve done and bringing them into the team to expand the Airbyte reverse ETL product.

“Airbyte has flourished by aligning with the engineers who are responsible for this key task. “Grouparoo experienced less demand because it was further down the value chain with a more diverse collection of stakeholders,” Leonard wrote.

Grouparoo CEO and co-founder Brian Leonard:

“Thank you for your continuing support, our users and investors. We had a group of early adopters and users who saw what we were trying to do with Grouparoo. They installed Grouparoo on their own servers or in our cloud, and some even created custom plugins to extend the platform. When we looked at it more closely, though, we realized we weren’t on the right track to make the kind of difference we intended to make in the world.”

He did say, though, that he feels Airbyte is on the correct track, in part because, in order to operationalize data, practically every organization today must extract and load data into their warehouses.

The purchase price was not disclosed by the two companies. In late 2020, Grouparoo raised US $3 million in a seed round led by Eniac Venture and Fuel Capital.
