Chinese robot company Pudu Robotics raises US$ 15M in series B+

China based delivery robot company Pudu Robotics, also called Pudu Tech raised US$ 15M in its series B+ funding round on 19 August 2020.

The round was led by Sequoia Capital China. Others who participated include existing investors  Meituan, Everwin Investment, QC Capital and Chengbohan Fund. In July 2020, it had raised US$ 15M in series B round. The series B+ funding has taken the total funding to roughly US$ 30M.

The funding will be used for expansion into various markets. The demand for Pudu robots has also increased due to COVID-19. People want to maintain social distancing and Pudu ensures that by eliminating the scope of human to human transmission, as robots don’t get sick.

Pudu Robotics works in the field of delivery robots. Founded in 2016, Pudu is headquartered in Shenzhen, the world capital for hardware innovation. It currently has more than 100 employees at Shenzhen Headquarters and Chengdu Branch. The founder and CEO Zhang Tao said that the funds from the Series B+ round will be utilized to expand into markets across the world.

Pudu Robotics manufactures self-driving server robots equipped with racks of trays that can shuffle plates and empty dishes to and from the kitchen. According to company, they have sold Pudu robots in more than 20 countries. Pudu had also announced that South Korean restaurant Muhguri has 11 Pudu robots serving food to customers. The mission of the company is to liberate the attendants in catering industry from laborious work, and let the robots do it.

With restaurants gradually opening up for dine-in services, Pudu robots can be used by restaurants for the safety of customers. Even though the use of robots will help in reducing the spread of coronavirus, it will also lead to unemployment.

Some of Pudu’s competitors are Chinese company Keenon Robotics, California-based Bear Robotics, and South Korea’s Woowa Bros., which has partnered with LG for server bots.
