Online Voice Messaging Platform Yac Raises US$ 7.5M in Series A

US-based Yac, an online voice messaging platform for remote teams raised US$ 7.5 million in Series A venture funding on 25 January 2021.

The funding round was led by GGV Capital and existing investor Slack Fund.

The funds raised will be utilized to hire talent for key roles, like heads of revenue, sales and customer success. The startup plans to invest in sponsoring podcasts, newsletters and buying ads. As of now, Yac has 9 full-time employees and about 8,000 users.

About Yac

Yac

Founded in 2019 by Hunter McKinley, Jordan Walker and Justin Mitchell, Yac is a digital voice messaging app developing a broad range of hosted messaging and communications services. The app includes inbound call management, fax to email, virtual numbers, audio conferencing and personal numbers facilities. Yac is headquartered in Kissimmee, Florida.

Originally named ‘Yelling Across Cubicles’ Yac was developed in a hackathon competition in 2019. The idea behind it was a sort of walkie-talkie that would help people to record and listen to voice messages from teammates. Yac won the competition and raised US$ 9M to create audio-first, keyboard-free messaging.

The startup helps companies integrate audio messaging into their workflow. The timing of the launch of Yac, right before the pandemic, has proved to be beneficial as companies now need improved communication during remote work more than ever. And needless to say, remote work is here to stay.

Yac hasn’t made any money yet but for now it is focusing on growth and marketing. “While the pandemic didn’t cause the company to shift its product focus, it helped it shift its focus away from having to educate potential users about the benefits of work from home. We were doing so much education about remote work and so we were not able to spend time educating people about Yac. Once the pandemic hit, we were focused finally about actually talking about the product,” said Yac co-founder and CEO Justin Mitchell.

The startup is currently focusing on making audio easier to use and discover within other widely used workplace tools such as Slack and Asana. It includes notifications or tools that will translate text messages into voice messages.
