21 March 2023, Netherlands – Vitestro, a company that creates autonomous blood drawing equipment, reports that its EUR 12 million Series A investment round is complete. With previous and new private investors with knowledge in the clinical laboratory and MedTech industries, Sonder Capital, located in California, led the funding round.

The money will go toward quickening product development, preparing EU market authorization, and starting manufacturing. CEO and co-founder of Vitestro Toon Overbeeke say: “With this fundraising round, Vitestro enters a new stage of development and moves a step closer to achieving its goal of bettering the venipuncture procedure for hundreds of millions of patients each year. Together with Sonder Capital, we look forward to expanding the company and revolutionizing patient care by utilizing their knowledge of how to market robotic medical technology effectively.”

Dr. Fred Moll, Managing Partner of Sonder Capital, has been chosen to serve on Vitestro’s non-executive board. After successfully developing Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Hansen Medical, Restoration Robotics, and Auris Health, Dr. Moll has been dubbed “the father of medical robots” (acquired by J&J).

“Everyone will have access to the best results thanks to medical robots. I’m confident Vitestro will pioneer autonomous blood drawing technology, “remarks Dr. Moll.

Worldwide, billions of blood samples are taken each year. Although playing a crucial part in clinical diagnosis, it needs more qualified healthcare staff. According to Andy McGibbon, Managing Partner of Sonder Capital, automating this routine activity is the next step for clinical laboratories to improve patient care while establishing a more sustainable business.

The Vitestro gadget combines automatic needle insertion with AI-based, ultrasound-guided 3D reconstruction to provide precise and secure blood collection. On more than a thousand patients, a prototype has been tested. Clinical trials will continue in 2023, and a 2024 launch on the European market is planned.

The creators of Vitestro took on the issue of improving the blood drawing process in 2017. With a dedicated team of about 50 highly experienced individuals with experience in medical robots, imaging software, AI, QA/RA, and business development, Vitestro is now making good progress toward achieving its goal. The headquarters of Vitestro are in Utrecht, Netherlands.
