European Union awards funding for four future clean energy projects

SEATTLE, Oct. 27, 2022 — Impact Bioenergy, a Seattle-based renewable energy firm, announced today that it has completed its USD 3.6 million Series A investment round. ITOCHU Corporation, one of Japan’s top general trade corporations, is an anchor investor in the round, including many Impact Bioenergy seed investors.

Impact Bioenergy develops and implements community-wide systems that are able to convert food waste into renewable natural gas, diverting food waste from landfills for productive usage while contributing significantly to decreasing carbon emissions and reversing climate change.

The money will allow Impact Bioenergy to grow to manufacture and extend its services in response to the increased state-level activities governing and promoting food waste reduction to landfills and the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. Jan Allen launched Impact Bioenergy in 2013, and the company has now put over a dozen digesters in service around the country.

“Forty percent of all food produced in and imported into the United States is never consumed. Food waste is trucked, burnt, and buried at a high cost, accounting for approximately 10% of our carbon emissions. Converting food waste to energy saves money on shipping and fuel and creates power, heat, and carbon offsets. Rarely does a technology emerge that has such an incredible enormous impact while producing zero waste. “Jan Allen, a Purdue University student at the time, developed his first digester in 1979.

Tim Tiscornia, President of Impact Bioenergy:

“Right now, we’re all searching for steps we can do to have a good influence on the climate. That is exactly what our goods do. We are already collaborating with several college and business campuses. Every week, we receive inquiries from restaurant chains, supermarket shops, and others that want to make a significant environmental impact by converting their organic waste into renewable natural gas and driving toward carbon neutrality.”

More about the startup:

Impact Bioenergy, which has been in business since 2013, is a pioneer in anaerobic digestion (AD). Impact Bioenergy designs and distributes prefabricated community-scale systems that transform food waste, liquids, and other organic wastes into sustainable natural gas and fertilizer with zero waste.

For several decades, anaerobic digestion has been employed to convert organics to energy. AD initiatives have always been large-scale. Our patented technology decreases AD’s physical footprint and costs while remaining completely odor-free, allowing for community-wide installation and acceptance. Impact Bioenergy has patented a modular and containerized technology that will enable it to build an exceptionally sized product for local consumption.
