Wingcopter, an award-winning German manufacturer and service provider of eVTOL unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), raised an undisclosed strategic investment from Expa on 23 September 2021. The startup is preparing for a Series B round of funding.

About Investor: Founded in 2014 by Uber co-founder Garrett Camp, Expa is a global network of startup founders aiding entrepreneurs through expertise, access and funding. Expa’s support of Wingcopter coincides with the firm’s mission of backing tech-enabled companies that create the next generation of category champions and resolve global challenges through innovation. Expa generally provides early-stage investment opportunities in transportation, logistics, advanced technology, fintech and health and wellness.

The objectives behind the funding: The company plans to deploy current proceeds to build “logistical highways in the sky”, autonomous drone delivery networks that leapfrog traditional means of transportation.

About Wingcopter

Founded in 2017 by Tom Plummer, Jonathan Hesselbarth and Ansgar Kadura, Wingcopter is an aviation company that operates both as a manufacturer of aviation-grade drone technology and as a service provider for a wide range of drone deployments, including the delivery of medical goods, parcels, food or spare parts, as well as mapping/surveying and inspection/monitoring. Wingcopter can take off and land vertically, resembling a multicopter while flying long distances as efficiently and swiftly as a fixed-wing aircraft, even in rain and wind. A core value proposition of Wingcopter is to support its partners in increasing operational efficiency through revolutionary triple drop technology, utilising smart and easily swappable batteries to maximize time in the air, and developing software that will permit a single pilot to fly and monitor up to 10 drones simultaneously.

What the Founder has to say:

“We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Expa and Garrett, which bring a brilliant network and years of experience building and globally scaling companies that disrupt entire industries,” said Tom Plümmer, CEO & Co-Founder, Wingcopter. “With their hands-on approach ‘By builders for builders’, Expa is actively supporting our strategy to create national-scale logistical highways in the sky.”

What the Investor has to say:

“Just how Uber revolutionized the way people get from point A to point B, Wingcopter is providing that same level of innovation to the transport of goods including urgently needed medicine and medical supplies, groceries, or freshly prepared food, and even has the power to automate e-commerce. Accelerated by the tailwinds of the global pandemic, we approach an inflection point in consumer adoption and industry regulation. Wingcopter is ideally positioned to capitalize on this momentum thanks to its cutting-edge delivery drone, software and services,” said Garrett Camp, Founder, Expa. “Given the team’s track record and impressive technology stack, Wingcopter will have a deep impact on supply chain transformation, logistics and on-demand delivery.”

The global Delivery Drones Market is anticipated to hit USD 5.6 billion by 2026, at a CAGR of 14% from 2021 to 2026. The startup’s strategic partnership with America’s largest air medical service provider Air Methods, and Japan’s biggest airline, All Nippon Airways, will support the company to capitalize on growth in the Delivery Drones Market. Also, Wingcopter’s new flagship aircraft, the Wingcopter 198, a state-of-the-art, an all-electric delivery drone designed for safe, reliable, fast, and bi-directional deliveries across a wide range of use cases, is another advantage that the company has. Its patented tilt-rotor technology permits vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) while also empowering efficient forward flight over long ranges owing to its fixed-wing design.
