The Sweden-based startups Volvo Penta and Qamcom Group have recently formed a brand new startup Cetasol. The new startup would spring to develop and offer iHelm (Intelligent Support System for Sustainable Business), a marine digital platform for optimising fuel consumption or energy usage, led by Volvo Penta’s former Chief Engineer of Automation and AI, Ethan Faghani.

As claimed by the founder companies, iHelm is much likely to have an enormous impact on the fuel efficiency of customer operations, given the preliminary pilot test run by Volvo Penta displayed a striking reduction of 17% in fuel consumption. At this point, CampX was introduced for further evaluation and decided to spin it off into a startup together with Qamcom Group.

Director of Business Development at Volvo Penta, Jakob Ursby, said, “The current pace of technological developments means we need to find additional ways to create customer value through innovation. To be a world leader in sustainable power solutions, we need to diversify our development, take products to market, and drive sustainability together in different partnerships. At Volvo Penta, we are already working with services and AI, but the unique thing is that the idea has spun off and is growing in a startup environment with an external tech partner.”

iHelm, also referred to as the captain’s own “personal trainer”, will help them steer the vessel more sustainably. The iHelm system consists of an on-board interface and a cloud solution that utilises Artificial Intelligence (AI) to find the optimum operation consistently. With its help, interpretation of data and identification of patterns gives selective quality recommendations for curtail fuel consumption or energy usage.

Cetasol will work very closely with customers and their vessels to ensure maximum efficiency. “The need for increased sustainability has never been more relevant, and technology will play a key role in creating new solutions,” says co-founder and CEO of Cetasol, Ethan Faghani. “Cetasol’s mission will be to help commercial marine companies save time and energy by identifying ways to be more efficient through an intelligent support system installed in each vessel.”
