Discord acquires AR and Video chat startup Ubiquity6

Famous gaming chat app Discord, which operates as a voice, video and text communication service, acquired US-based augmented reality startup Ubiquity6 on 28 June 2021 for an undisclosed amount.

The terms of the Discord acquisition weren’t disclosed. Ubiquity6 has been having some issues finding wide audiences for its products in recent months. It also abandoned most of the products that it was building over the years. Ubiquity6 had raised US$ 37.5 million from investors including Benchmark, First Round, Kleiner Perkins and Google’s Gradient Ventures. Its recent publicly disclosed funding was a US$ 27 million Series B in October of 2018.

About Ubiquity6

Founded in 2017 by Anjney Midha and Ankit Kumar, Ubiquity6 uses computer vision to enable massively multiplayer, persistent AR experiences on top of the physical world. Ubiquity6 aims to unlock new ways for people to connect through shared experiences. It claims that the acquisition will allow the startup to accelerate that mission. Ubiquity6’s team, Backyard product and multiplayer technology will be integrated into Discord. The startup is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States.

In late 2019, Ubiquity6 had launched a product called Displayland, which aimed to gamify the process of 3D scanning physical environments with a smartphone’s camera. However, it couldn’t become a success due to lower adoption and a slump in mobile AR market, despite hefty investment from tech giants including Apple and Google.

In a drastic pivot, Ubiquity6 left augmented reality to build out a desktop platform that allowed users to play simple online party games together remotely. The beta platform, called Backyard, was designed for pandemic era habits. It failed to sustain in the market and was discontinued this week. “Our platform, games and activities have found a new home there, and we’re excited to share more in the coming months about bringing the best of Backyard to Discord,” reads the Backyard website.
