E-scooter startup Superpedestrian launches in 9 European cities

US-based Superpedestrian, a venture-backed company developing lightweight electric vehicles with integrated online platforms, launched in 9 cities across Europe on 18 June. The newly added cities include Austria, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Palermo, Vienna, Stockholm, Lisbon and a few Spanish towns. It is planning to operate in more than 30 European cities by the end of 2021.

Along with the expansion, Superpedestrian is building a team of operations managers by hiring locally. It is also setting up a network of local businesses for fleet management support.

Superpedestrian aims to bring a new age of sustainable transportation and an incremental change to the economy. Like other micro-mobility startups, it has also taken the initiative to bring carbon-free, economically viable and sustainable transport.

The company was founded in 2012 by Assaf Biderman and is headquartered in Cambridge, MA. Founded out of MIT, Superpedestrian develops technologies for micro-electric vehicles that optimize safety, reliability and performance. It spent over 5 years developing its proprietary Vehicle Intelligence system. Since 2018the company has focused its efforts on developing and validating its new electric LINK scooter for shared fleets.

Vehicle Intelligence System (VIS) prevents over 50% of issues that would cause other scooters to fail and streamline operations if issues arise. An improvement in vehicle safety for scooter riders and major cost savings for fleet operators makes Superpedestrian a leading e-scooter brand. Superpedestrian’s LINK scooter can detect and protect against more than 100 common malfunctions. Its platform of embedded computers and cloud software enables the scooters to autonomously protect from damage during and between rides. The scooters can detect potential problems such as battery fires, short circuits or failed brakes within nanoseconds and even take corrective action to avert damage.

Superpedestrian

Superpedestrian entered Europe in Rome in September 2020 and launched shared fleets of its LINK scooter to Madrid and Alcalá de Henares by the end of the year. It will enable them with 100,000 miles of carbon emission-free travel every day.

“This achievement is confirmation that Superpedestrian’s shared e-scooters are now really taking off in Europe. Adding nine locations in just a few weeks, with a further seven to come by the end of June, and serving 24 European cities less than one year after entering the market, are tremendous achievements. It’s proof that our market-leading safe and smart e-scooters, with their robust design and advanced self-diagnostic and self-protection technologies, are ideally suited to Europe’s cities, riders and pedestrians.” — Haya Douidri, Vice President EMEA, Superpedestrian.
