uYilo e-mobility

South Africa’s ‘The uYilo eMobility Programme’ is inviting qualifying projects to submit their proposal for the uYilo “Kick Start” fund. uYilo eMobility is an initiative by the Technology Innovation Agency to boost the adoption of electric vehicle mobility across South Africa. The 2021 uYilo Kick Start Fund targets eMobility related projects ideas that can achieve market commercialization.

The fund is established to support electric mobility related products or services and fund applied research and development to a maximum of:

(i) R500,000 (US$ 35K) (including VAT) per project for individual projects (one participant), and

(ii) R1,000,000 (US$ 80K) (including VAT) per project for collaborative projects (multiple participants).

The grant funding which is focused on applied research will accelerate Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) and the creation of products, processes or services that can be commercialised to advance South Africa’s eMobility industry.

Priority will be given to projects that –

1. Have established research the strategic focus areas of Energy Storage Technologies, Electric Vehicle Systems, Charging Infrastructure within Smart-Grids and Connected Car among others.

2.  Industry projects that will lead to local manufacturing of a product or, delivery of a service or support public transportation.

The national uYilo eMobility Programme was launched in 2013 as an initiative of the Technology Innovation Agency (Act 26 of 2008) to enable, facilitate and mobilise electric vehicle mobility in South Africa. The name of uYilo is derived from the local Xhosa language which means “to create”, which signifies the motive of creating this new mobility industry in South Africa.

uYilo Programme has various activities that include government lobbying, industry engagement, pilot projects, capacity development, enterprise development and thought leadership. It supports various activities related to mobility such as battery testing, material testing, vehicle systems and a smart grid ecosystem.
