speech therapy platform Expressable

US-based Expressable, a speech therapy solution that combines 1-on-1 teletherapy with its proprietary education platform, raised US$ 4.5M in a seed funding round on 7 May 2021.

Investors: The funding was co-led by Lerer Hippeau and NextView Ventures, with participation from Amplifyher ventures.

Purpose of the funding: The funds will be utilized by the company to expand its clinical provider network, partner with commercial and Medicaid plans and reach more customers. It is also looking forward to accelerating the investment of its parent-focused education platform.

About Expressable

Expressable

Founded in 2019 by Leanne Sherred and Nicholas Barbara, Expressable is an online speech therapy practice for everyone with a communication disorder. It has a parent-focused care model that uses technology and education to integrate speech therapy techniques into children’s daily lives, with an aim to improving outcomes and experiences. It removes the financial and geographic barriers that have traditionally limited access to speech therapy techniques.

How does it work? Expressable’s unique care model matches families with an experienced teletherapist, who are specialized in their area of need. Expressable enables secure client-therapist texting, provides 500+ home-based learning modules. This helps parents to reinforce skill-building exercises throughout the week.

The startup claims that around five million children in the US have a speech or language disorder, and nearly half go untreated. It believes that the most effective way to improve paediatric outcomes is by helping parents become active participants in their child’s care by providing them with all the necessary tools.

What the founders have to say: “I’ve seen firsthand the life-changing effects speech therapy has on a child’s academic, emotional, and social wellbeing. We couldn’t have found better partners that share our vision for reimagining the standard of care so that more children can experience the gift of communication.” — Leanne Sherred, co-founder and President of Expressable.

What investors have to say: “Expressable has developed a fundamentally better way to provide millions of families across the U.S. with affordable access to high-quality speech therapy. Through its online platform and product-first approach, Expressable improves the experience for not only patients but also providers and payers. We believe the company is positioned to be the market leader and help serve anyone with a communication disorder.” — Graham Brown, Partner at Lerer Hippeau.
