Zaara Biotech receives investment

India-based student biotech startup – Zaara Biotech that focuses on research in energy and food crisis, received an investment of US$ 10 million from the UAE-based TCN International commerce LLC for its project, entitled “Algae –Seaweed Technology,” under the brand B-lite Cookies. Najeeb Bin Haneef, Founder and CEO of Zaara Biotech and Mohamed Shafi Abdulla, Chairman and Managing Director, TCN International Commerce LLC, signed an MoU in Sharjah, UAE.

Purpose of the funding: The proceeds from the funding will be used for research and development, production, distribution and marketing under TCN International Commerce to expand into the global market.

About Zaara Biotech

Founded in 2016 by Najeeb Bin Haneef, Zaara Biotech focuses on research in energy and food crisis using micro-algae. It is manufacturing India’s First Algal- Seaweed Food products and other FMCG products that will ensure complete family care. The startup has received support from the Indian Council of Agriculture and Research – CIFT Cochin, Govt. of India.

Zaara Biotech’s product V-lite Spirulina Cookies contains superfood Spirulina made from rare variants of millets, iron, proteins and vitamin C. The startup claims that the cookies contain various nutrients and antioxidants that may benefit your brain and body. Its product was also showcased in the GITEX 2020 international conference held in Dubai as Zaara was a part of the international startup delegation led by KSUM.

Najeeb Bin Haneef founded Zaara Biotech when he was a biotechnology engineering student of Sahrdaya College of Engineering and Technology in 2016. Zaara was incubated in the Sahrdaya Technology Business Incubator. Haneef along with his team had set up a ‘Mushroom Hub’ in their first year at the campus before starting their own entrepreneurial venture. Zaara has also designed photobioreactors using micro-algae and aims to bring India to the forefront of bioengineering.

TCN International Commerce will help Zaara to take its products across multiple geographies. TCN already has a wide presence in various sectors like IT, business process management, trading, healthcare, defence, critical service providers, aviation, education, FMCG, construction and engineering and oil and gas.
