A San Francisco-based music platform, Songclip, raised a sum of US $11 million in a venture funding round announced on March 9, 2021. The investment was led by the founder of Evolution VC Partners, Gregg Smith, bringing Songclip’s total funding value up to US $23 million. In participation is The Kraft Group, Raised in Space, Michael Rubin, Gaingels, and Forefront Venture Partners. The round also enjoyed contributions from industry executives Steve Greenberg, Jason Flom, and the band AJR.

The road ahead

With music being a big part of the experience on several applications apps like TikTok and Triller, Songclip’s co-founder and COO John vanSuchtelen stated, “That is not the end of how music is going to be a feature but a beginning.” He further explained, “In the next 9 to 12 months, just like you never have a phone without a camera, you’re not going to have an application without music clips as a feature when you make videos.”

Products & Services offered

According to CEO Andy Blacker, Songclip not only licenses music but also does its tagging and clipping while providing instruments for music labels to protect their intellectual property and give information on how users are interacting with the music. He explains that, unlike Giphy, Songclip is not seeking to establish a consumer brand.

To achieve the above, a combination of human editing and technology is required. Blacker said the human element is the key to understanding the modulation of songs and their association, like the fact that Katrina and the Waves’ “Walking on Sunshine” is a happy song without having the word “happy” in it or that Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge over Troubled Water” is not really about water or bridges.

“If I say I’m going to send you a four-minute song, it’s just not going to work that way, that’s not how we communicate anymore, how do you take the music and transform it into the bite suitable for a social context?” added vanSuchtelen.

Trends in the industry

Songclip has developed an API that allows users to search for and share music when integrated with other applications. VanSuchtelen said that, like Giphy, Songclip plans to popularize a new media format (the short audio clip) and make it accessible across a wide range of services.

Company Profile

Songclip is a new licensed music format developed specifically for social posts, texting, and fast communication. Their multi-patented networked product solution, the Songclip API, integrates seamlessly into mobile applications, social platforms, and virtual marketplaces to facilitate expression, monetization, and music streaming. The startup operates the world’s top searchable library of 5-30 second meta-tagged music clips in partnership with the music industry.
