The winner behind Clubhouse app’s rise – Agora Inc.

We all know how Clubhouse has suddenly risen to fame with luminaries like Elon Musk praising the app. But the actual winner behind its fame is Agora Inc., a Shanghai-based startup that provides communication software solutions and offers video, voice and live interactive streaming platforms to interact and engage with others online.

Agora is a low-profile provider of software tools. The startup soared more than 150% since mid-January when people came to know about how it powers the now famous app Clubhouse. Agora provides developers with everything that they need to build real-time voice and video functions within applications, a template known as a software development kit. The startup is now worth almost US$ 10 billion.

Engineers while decompiling the Clubhouse app have revealed Agora’s name in the code, which means that Clubhouse is using at least part of the startup’s Software Development Kit. The founders of Clubhouse, Paul Davison and Rohan Seth have also revealed that they do  Agora.

But something that worries Clubhouse users is their privacy, as the Chinese law requires the companies to hand over data and information at the request of the Communist Party. The Agora’s customizable tools run on users’ devices as part of client applications like Clubhouse. The co-founder of Agora, Tony Wang cleared that his company doesn’t store any end-user data but serves as a “pass-over.”
