HealthTech company for Transgender Community Plume Raises US$ 14M

US-based startup Plume, the first health tech company built for the transgender community, raised US$ 14 million in Series A funding round on 2 February 2021.

Investors: The funding round was led by Craft Ventures with participation from General Catalyst, Slow Ventures and Town Hall Ventures.

Purpose of the funding: Plume will utilize the funds to scale its growth nationally. It is looking to invest in top tier talent specialized in trans health as well as expand its reach in new markets. The startup is aiming to make gender-affirming care available to every trans person in need.

About Plume

Plume

Founded in 2019 by Dr. Matthew Wetschler (CEO) and Dr. Jerrica Kirkley, Plume’s Chief Medical Officer, Plume is leading the trans digital health category in the US. Its services are focused on providing gender-affirming care, medication and products to the trans community. The Plume app provides safe and expert gender-affirming care through the convenience of a smartphone.

Plume has fundamentally changed how the trans community seeks and receives gender-affirming care. The clinicians make tailored-made plans to achieve their member’s individual goals and provide constant resources, guidance and support throughout. The members pay US$ 99 a month and receive 24/7 access to gender-affirming care, lab monitoring, letters of support, personal consultations, and home delivery of hormone medications.

What the CEO has to say: “The trans community has long been denied the healthcare it deserves and Plume is changing that. Our telehealth model allows us to scale quickly in new markets and provide expert care at an affordable price for our members. Our platform is designed to make the journey for those seeking gender-affirming care a seamless and joyous one. Our goal is to transform health care for every trans life,” said Dr. Matthew Wetschler, Plume co-founder and CEO.

What investors have to say: “Access to gender-affirming care can be lifesaving for those who need it. While a small number of clinics have focused on the trans community, the vast majority of patients have been unable to access affordable care. Plume has built a team of providers, care coordinators, and clinical managers that are trans specialists and allies to their patients: they are making possible what has until now been a distant promise of the future. We are excited to partner with this excellent, purpose-driven team,” said Lainy Painter, Principal at Craft Ventures.

More than two million Americans belong to the trans community and over 30% of them delay health care for the fear of discrimination. Plume’s goal is to remove these barriers and make gender-affirming care available to everyone who needs it.
