Twitter gets into newsletter business by acquiring Revue

Social Media company Twitter announced on 27 January 2021 that it has acquired Revue, a Dutch startup that allows users to publish and monetize email newsletters, thus getting into the newsletter business.

The Product Lead Kayvon Beykpour and VP of Publisher Products Mike Park of Twitter said that getting into the newsletter business is a new way for Twitter to serve the writers and publishers who have built a following with their tweets.

“Our goal is to make it easy for them to connect with their subscribers, while also helping readers better discover writers and their content. We’re imagining a lot of ways to do this, from allowing people to sign up for newsletters from their favourite follows on Twitter, to new settings for writers to host conversations with their subscribers. It will all work seamlessly within Twitter,” they added.

What is Revue?

Revue

Revue is an end-to-end newsletter publication software as a service app that provides a landing page, analytics and a full suite of newsletter tools from publication to list management along with monetization. Anybody can start a newsletter free of cost and the only paid component is when the newsletter is monetized i.e., 5% of earnings. Revue aims to make writing, editing, managing, emailing and monetizing a newsletter easier by integrating multiple services needed to run a successful newsletter. This helps to simplify the process of publishing a newsletter to a great extent.

Revue has some major publishers like Vox Media and The Markup as its customers. The competitors of Revue include MailChimp, MailPoet and Sendgrid that are paid services for managing, monetizing and mailing newsletters.

The company will continue developing new monetization features, like broadening revenue streams or serving as a cornerstone of someone’s business. Twitter will operate Revue as a standalone product, with focus on improving the ways writers create their newsletters, build their audience and get paid for their work. The company is also making its pro features free for all users and lowering the fee charged on paid newsletters by 5%.

Twitter has invested in a few companies that support the business aspect of managing and publishing tweets. But Revue will rather take Twitter to a new direction, helping publishers who already rely on Twitter for promotional efforts to grow their revenues even more through newsletters. It will help Twitter expand its revenue stream beyond advertising.
