Byju’s to acquire Coaching Institute Aakash for US$ 1B, Amazon India Launches Amazon Academy – Big News for India’s Edtech Sector

Byju's, Amazon Academy

The rate at which India’s Edtech sector is growing is incredible. In 2020, the Edtech startups Byju’s and Unacademy made it to the Unicorn List. And in 2021, the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos is all set to enter India’s Edtech sector. Let’s look at the two major announcements made on 13 January 2021 in the Edtech segment:

1.       India’s Edtech Giant Byju’s to Acquire Coaching Institute Aakash for US$ 1B

Byju's

India is set to witness a historic deal as the US$ 12 billion Edtech giant Byju’s is set to acquire the brick-and-mortar Coaching Institute – Aakash Educational Services for US$ 1 billion. This deal could become one of the biggest Edtech deals the world has ever seen.

Byju’s declined to comment on the matter. However, Aakash Educational Services Limited (AESL) confirmed on 13 January 2021, that it is in talks with Byju’s for building a new partnership. “Putting these speculations to rest, we would like to state that AESL is on a mission to build India’s largest digitally-enabled, omnichannel education company. We will accelerate our digital transformation and deliver phenomenal value to our students. We will rapidly expand our omnichannel & digital offerings, as we embark on the next trajectory of quality education & growth,” said the company.

Aakash

Aakash is a well-known offline tutoring centre in India that provides test preparatory services to students. It has a network of more than 200 learning centres across the country. The New Delhi-based Institute is one of the most popular and biggest institutes when it comes to entrance preparation for admissions to top engineering and medical institutes.

With the demand for online education increasing, Byju’s has been on a funding frenzy since last year. With brick-and-mortar institutes like Aakash being forced to be shut due to COVID-19, Edtech institutes like Byju’s are upping their games and burgeoning at a rapid pace.

2.       Amazon India Launches Amazon Academy

Amazon Academy

The global e-commerce giant Amazon India launched Amazon Academy on 13 January 2020, to help students prepare for the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) for entrance to engineering colleges. The exciting news is that the beta version of Amazon Academy will be available free of cost for the next few months, on the web and the Google Play store.

“The online preparation offering will equip students with in-depth knowledge and practice routines required for the JEE, through the curated learning material, live lectures and comprehensive assessments in Math, Physics and Chemistry,” announced the company.

“Amazon Academy aims to bring high quality, affordable education to all, starting with those preparing for engineering entrance examinations. Our mission is to help students achieve their outcomes while also empowering educators and content partners to reach millions of students. Our primary focus has been on content quality, deep learning analytics and student experience.
