NanoBridge Semiconductor Inc announces 130 million Yen Series A funding

NanoBridge Semiconductor Inc., a Tokyo based technology company announced raising 130 million Yen in Series A funding on 1st December 2020. The funding round was led by NEC Corporation, Japan Industrial Partners and a few other VCs.

NEC Corporation has an established history for promoting the commercialization of NB and has made the decision to transfer the NB related intellectual property to NBS and conduct a spin-off for the further business growth.

With this newly raised investment NBS will utilize the NB technology in the areas where radiation resistance is mandatory like communication, infrastructure and aerospace. They will also develop a wide range of NanoBridge businesses for the international and domestic manufacturers like the automobile and IoT device manufacturers. They have an aim of achieving 5 billion Yen sales by 2025.

The company is grabbing attention as an ideal technology for field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and memories which can continuously rewrite the circuits. This is because NB consumes less power and doesn’t require power for maintaining on or off status. It is also highly resistant for extreme temperature and radiations.

The NanoBridge Technology

NanoBridge Semiconductor uses a technology called NanoBridge. This technology is a new switch device which is used with semiconductor devices for partially replacing the conventional switch and semiconductor memory. The composition of NanoBridge includes (PSE) solid electrolyte, layered between the active copper (Cu) and inert Ruthenium (Ru) electrodes. A low resistance power ON state is created when a positive voltage is applied over the copper electrode. This ionizes the atoms of copper from the electrode and makes a Cu bridge between both the electrodes resulting in ON state. The same way, by applying negative voltage Cu bridge is broken with the Cu electrode which results in a resistive OFF power state.

The director of Japan Industrial Partners, Richard E. Dyck said, “The atomic switch discovery based on atoms movement rather than the electrons was a huge development in basic science. The NanoBridge team after two decades of focus and skill engineering has successfully transformed this development into a practical application. It is quite exciting to see the NB atomic switch is now ready to manufacture economically and on standard product equipment.”

About NanoBridge Semiconductors Inc

The Tsukuba based NanoBridge Semiconductor Inc was established in 2019 for delivering ICT applications with the innovative NanoBridge technology. NBS provides rad-hard programmable and low power non-volatile memory, AIoT terminals using the NanoBridge technology. It aims at building deep relationships with customers and working together for opening a new normal society.
