Indonesia-based culinary startup Mangkok Ku has secured US$ 2M in a seed funding round held in November 2020, led by Alpha JWC Ventures.

Proceeds from the funding round will help the startup in opening 30 branches by the end of 2020 and more than 75 by 2021.

Mangkok Ku

Founded in 2019 by Indonesian MasterChef judge Arnold Poernomo, businessman Randy Kartadinata and F&B serial entrepreneurs Gibran Rakabuming and Kaesang Pangarep, Mangko Ku offers rice bowls on par with professional dishes, at reasonable prices. It gives a local twist to conventional Japanese rice bowls by using local Indonesian ingredients so as to suit the local taste buds. It is now aiming to expand its offerings beyond rice bowls in 2021.

Mangkok Ku presently runs 22 branches in the Greater Jakarta area and plans to expand its footprint into Surabaya soon. It will begin offering beverages, desserts and packaged sambal chilli sauce after rice bowls and in due course introduce other dishes to develop into an end-to-end culinary solution for its customers.

Co-founder Randy Kartadinata claims Mangkok Ku serves 400 to 600 bowls per branch on a day-to-day basis and insists he is not satisfied. His goal is to establish Mangkok Ku as Indonesia’s largest F&B group for the mass market and build the startup’s own ecosystem of numerous brands and culinary organizations. Additionally, the startup also aspires to be the best culinary company in terms of local and regional scalability, as well as operations excellence. This is the reason they chose the startup route and partnered with Alpha JWC Ventures.

Co-founder Arnold Poernomo also remarked that their collective passion for local food is what drove them to start the company, and they believe that the core of Mangkok Ku lies in the power of its dishes and unceasing innovation. The team is building the company with a global mindset, i.e., the only way they can grow fast, right and sustainably, is by providing the best choices at affordable prices and maintaining a uniform process in every single dish they serve.

He concluded by quoting, “That’s why we operate all of our branches and apply technology-enhanced cooking processes to maintain product quality and consistency.”
