The UK based Femcare brand, Callaly that manufactures and provides a range of personal care products for females, announced receiving a portion of the United Kingdom’s Sustainable Innovation Fund (£173,778) on 4th November 2020.

As a part of the United Kingdom’s research and innovation, Innovate UK is providing an investment of around £191 million funds for several collaborative and single R&D projects. This will be a part of a sustainable innovation fund for the next two years. These competitions have the motive of helping the several sectors of the United Kingdom to regain their lost tracks post effects of Covid-19.

The research on tampliners will be supported by sustainable plastics experts from the Imperial College of London and Nonwovens engineering experts from (NIRI) Nonwovens Information and Research Institute.

The revolutionary biodegradable tampliners

They have received this grant for the development of their award winning tampliner to have better standards of sustainability. Their product is a 2-in-1 tampliner that combines the organic cotton tampon with mini liner to provide extra protection against leaks. The tampliner is mess-free, hypoallergenic and convenient to use. The product was originally invented by a gynecologist. The virtual applicator is also made breathable and medical quality material that suits the body.

The tampliners offered by Callaly are a completely new and innovative female care product. It has three main parts that is a cotton mini liner cotton tampon and a virtual applicator which connects both of them. At present all of the components used in the tampliner are biodegradable except the virtual applicator. The cylindrical sheath is the main component of the tampliner that provides an ultra thin breathable membrane that joins the tampon to its cotton mini liner component. For now the tampliner sheath is made from a polymer which is not sustainable. But with the newly received Innovate UK fund, Callaly can now research and try possible biodegradable options for developing a plastic free alternative for this.

As a B-corporation we always try to set the highest standards and achieving a fully biodegradable tampliner would be a great breakthrough for sustainability in the period care market. This will also be helpful for the further applications in several clinical research and medical treatments.”

Callaly is a female care enterprise that manufacturers and provides products for period care. It was founded in 2014 by Thang Vo-Ta, Ewa Radziwon and Alex Hooi. They are headquartered in London, England. Their revolutionary product, the organic and biodegradable tampliner is sold on their online platform with a customizable subscription approach.
