AOne, a Malaysian edtech startup which integrates a B2C marketplace and B2B backend management software for local enrichment lessons announced today (02.11.2020) that it had secured MYR2 million (US$500,000) in a seed funding round, led by regional VC Wavemaker Partners.

This round of funding comes seven months after the company received an investment of MYR300K (US$75K) from ScaleUp Ventures Malaysia and MYR300K (US$75k) grant from Cradle Fund.

In the coming 12 to 15 months, the company aims to use the investment to drive market expansion across Southeast Asia, along with working towards enhancing its current product options in the education sector.

Currently, AOne serves more than 800 enrichment centres, manages over 50,000 lessons and more than 100,000 learners and educators across many cities, with most of them located in Malaysia and Singapore. At present, AOne caters to educators in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Macau.

The venture was originally planned as an online marketplace for local classes but it later developed AOneSchools, the management software used to facilitate student enrolment, class scheduling and fee tracking for educators.

The startup’s vision is to create an all-in-one app for education, beginning from a B2C lesson marketplace, a B2B backend management system, leading to an automated payment solution for educators all across Southeast Asian cities.

What the investor has to say

“Darren, who has the experience in running three mathematics centres, has built AOne with a firm understanding of what education centres, parents and their children need,” said Gavin Lee, General Partner at Wavemaker.

“This is powerfully reflected in the fact that AOne is a dual-sided solution that not only reduces manual work in education centres, but also allows parents themselves to manage their children’s schedules and payments. They’ve grown despite the pandemic and have happy clients in Singapore such as The Collective Knowledge, Frankel Tutors, My Chinese Steps etc,” he added
