Top Innovative Vegan Startups You Need to Know About

With new innovative food solutions, in order to bring about a more sustainable, crisis-resilient and healthier food system, a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle has become a trend. Vegan people choose not to consume dairy products including eggs and other products of animal origin, with an aim to bring a difference in their health, animal welfare and the environment. But the difficulty that remains is that they don’t want to miss out on cheese! However, with many startups coming up with numerous alternatives for such problems faced by vegans, this is not going to be an issue anymore. These are so close to the original products, that the difference is often difficult to taste.

From vegan dairy cheese and milk to 100% animal-free meat alternatives, startups are continuously innovating with mass affordability in mind.

1st November is celebrated as World Vegan Day. The event was established in 1994 by Louise Wallis, the then Chair of The Vegan Society in the United Kingdom, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the organization and the coining of the terms “vegan” and “veganism”.

Let’s look at some of the most innovative vegan startups:

Their special range of ready-to-eat meals has no preservatives which can be kept at room ambient with more than one-year shelf life with no loss of taste and nutrients.

2.       Beyond Meat, USA

Beyond Meat

Beyond Meat specializes in providing plant-based meat and aims to make a positive impact on four growing global issues such as human health, climate change, constraints on natural resources and animal welfare. Its plant-based meats are made by combining expert innovation with simple, non-GMO ingredients. Its products offer greater or equal protein levels than their animal counterparts. The startup has also made its way into German supermarkets with its burgers and caused a huge wave of interest. It was founded by Ethan Brown in 2009.

Beyond Meat has broken down the medium of meat into its components and sourced them from plant sources. For example, proteins can be found in beans and brown rice, fats in vegetable oils, minerals in salts and carbohydrates in potato flour. Other ingredients are water and natural flavours as well as colours to copy animal meat. The startup offers burgers, vegan versions of beef, sausages and minced meat.

3. Devon Garden, UK

Devon Garden

Devon Garden has a mission to put protein-packed dairy alternatives on the map. Devon Garden is based in the UK. It is developing its own protein extraction methods and using advanced data analytics to accelerate the discovery and exploitation of plant-based proteins to create milk, creams, yogurts, ice-creams, etc. It does it without compromising taste, texture or any of the characteristics of actual dairy products.

Devon Garden has developed a very rich, creamy and highly nutritious milk made from yellow split peas and has launched it in the market as well.

4.       Planted, Switzerland

Planted

Planted uses cutting edge technology to turn four natural ingredients into plant-based meat that mimics the taste, texture, and mouthfeel of traditional animal meat. It takes raw materials from plants and creates tasty, nutritious, high-protein, and juicy products that the customers love.

It was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in Zürich, Switzerland. Planted has developed a vegan meat alternative. With the help of heat, pressure and a special way of tearing, the plant materials are given the fibre structure of the meat. The first product, Planted Chicken, has become quite famous in Switzerland. It is already being served in some restaurants there and will soon even be found in Swiss supermarkets.

5.       Soft Spot Foods, India
