Tallinn-based cloud-driven platform for website security, BotGuard has raised €500K in a funding round held in October 2020. The investment round was led by Tera Ventures along with participation from multiple angel investors and industry professionals such as Per Björklund, Stefan Lindeberg, Håkan Saltin and others.

We often come across CAPTCHA’s distorted images to prove that we aren’t robots. BotGuard enables website owners to combat malicious software bots, hence removing the requirement of CAPTCHA. BotGuard can be added to any website, using a simple plug-in. It tracks the traffic coming to the page and redirects any doubtful requests to the BotGuard server. Its algorithms examine the data received, removing malicious bots while permitting regular users to enter the site without redundant extra steps.

As per BotGuard’s co-founder, Nik Rosenberg, earlier, only large companies have been able to pay for efficient anti-bot cybersecurity solutions, with monthly fees equal to almost tens of thousands of euros, but today BotGuard’s cloud service could give SMEs the chance to shield their website from bad bots for only a few euros a month. Professionals estimate that almost half of today’s web traffic comes from bots. Search engines or payment systems are considered to be good. But, other bots are evidently malicious, as they copy website content, send spam, try to steal user info and perform other unsolicited activities.

Nik Rosenberg further explained that there are multiple ways to misuse information with the help of bots, which cause destruction and inconvenience to the website owner but are not always illegal in nature. One such example is that software bots can remove a customer’s record from the stock, without him/her actually buying the product; the goods are added to the shopping cart but are never confirmed or paid for, subtracting one product from the stock and blocking other customers from buying the goods. This also happens in many reservation systems, such as airline tickets, hotel rooms, holiday packages, restaurants, etc.

BotGuard had tested its beta version for 6 months and then launched its first official version in July 2020. Its platform has already been integrated into thousands of websites globally. The startup strives to transform the cybersecurity landscape and normal business culture by offering bot control and protection for all website owners, irrespective of their budget. Rosenburg concluded by quoting, “Whether we are talking about a company website, blog, or personal website, everyone should be able to protect their important information easily and affordably.”
