Remotion gains US$13m funding from Greylock

Remotion, the platform that aims at revolutionizing video calls, announced a US$ 13m fundraise along with the launch of its product in the beta stage on 6th October 2020. This includes a Series A funding led by Greylock and a seed funding round led by First Round Capital.

The idea behind Remotion

The idea behind Remotion is creation of an always-on-video workspace, and people can catch up with their team members and managers just with a click. The CEO of Remotion, Alexandar Embiricos, was never into the thought of building such an always-on-camera platform. Still, he liked the idea of creating a workspace where face-time over video can be made a part of an organization’s culture. Remotion has been building a dashboard that pins on the taskbar of your desktop with the profile picture of the co-workers of the organization.

The process to start a face-time with a colleague is made simple with just clicking the profile picture bubble, clicking the video chat icon to send a chat request, and starting your talking video. It might not sound like any revolutionary workflow, but Remotion aims to build a platform that can make video calls stop feeling like any event and more like a lightweight way of reaching out without including e-mails or predefined meetings. In the long run, they want to change how people use videos and how they can be used informally.

The startup is launched, keeping the future predictions of companies shifting to fully remote workforces. The app is aimed to give control to users when they want to talk to their colleagues, even for a little chit-chat. The users of the platform can set the availability status to custom or standard, update profile pictures, or even use integration from Google Calendar to signal what they are working on.
