Pixie Labs raises US$9.15m in Series A funding

Pixie Labs announced on 1st October 2020 of raising US$9.15 million in its Series A funding for their observability platform in the funding round led by Benchmark and participation of GV(Google Ventures). Along with the funding announcement, they also revealed about their service now being accessible as a public beta.

The idea behind Pixie Labs

The startup provides tools for developers to observe the insights of their Kubernetes-native applications. Pixie Labs was co-founded by (CPO) Ishan Mukherjee and (CEO) Zain Asgar. Zain was previously working on Google AI while working as a former engineer in Google and an adjunct Stanford professor, whereas Ishan has led the product team of Siri Knowledge Graph (Apple) and worked on Robotics efforts in Amazon. Originally Asgar joined Benchmark to build Machine Learning led developer tools. But with time, he changed the idea to utilize the power of Machine Learning with power tools and help the developers administer large scale project deployments.

Most of the monitoring and observability systems are dependent on IT teams and operators, which is a manual process, but Pixie believes this process should be automated and wants to develop a tool that developers would want to use. Pixie provides instant and automated visibility into the production environment as it runs in the developer’s Kubernetes platform. The monitoring tool of Pixie is distributed as a bundle of integrated services that can be installed on Kubernetes. The tool is a freely available SaaS product and doesn’t need any instrumentation. Rather the data is collected using Linux technique eBPF that collects data at source.

The ‘Pixie’ Scripts

The developers experience a script that the company calls ‘Pixie Scripts.’ They can codify the debugging workflows Python akin language (PxL). Their system features several scripts written by their team and community. As they said, not every user needs these scripts; an average or even an above-average developer won’t think to use any of these scripts. They will use them only when they need to solve specific problems. The team further plans to make the scripting language and scripts usable and robust so that developers can move from the passive way of monitoring their systems to the active way of building scripts that can work to take their data actions.
