Potato Play raises US$ 1.75M in seed funding

Singapore-based gaming startup Potato Play has raised US$ 1.75M in a seed funding round held in September 2020, led by Beenext. Play Ventures and Atlas Ventures also participated in the funding round.

Capital raised will be used to invest in technology assets and to expand its sourcing and marketing operations.

Founded in 2018 by Carole Le Van, Henji Tan, Kingsley Joseph, Lijin Liang and Vincent Low who have previously been a part of companies like Digital Chocolate, King, Microsoft Game Studios, and Gameloft. The startup is a mobile game publisher that transforms Asian mobile games into worldwide hits. Through its data-driven publishing, unique game-sourcing and assessment process as well as an embedded platform SDK, advertising and monetization competencies, the startup has brought over 20 games to market.

Potato Play claims its games have been downloaded 15 million times, which include games like Merge Quest, Merge Rush Z, Crossing Gaps and Pocket Racing. Asian game developers, with years of experience in hardcore games, also have the aptitude to execute and perform quickly on trends. Hence, they are considered an ideal fit to transform in the hybrid-casual games space. Potato Play utilizes verified data and indicators to identify these high potential games at early stages and offers win-win deals to developers to publish and popularize them.

Hero Choudhary, partner at Beenext was quoted to say, “We are very pleased with the team and their data-driven approach to identifying high potential games. We expect to see a lot of game-changing innovation from Asian game developers, and Potato Play is in the exact right spot to identify and help scale the most high-potential innovators.”

The startup had previously raised US$500K in pre-seed funding round, led by Play Ventures in January 2020.
